Operation: Shopping Catastrophe
This Play was written for Drama Class in Grade 9. It was supposed to be an adaptation of the game Operation.

Time
The Present, the afternoon, and the morning.
Place
The hospital, waiting room, magazines on tables, the operating room, Tiffany is on the operating table and there is equipment on a table for surgery. It’s a hospital; there is other rooms and things that you would normally find in a hospital.
(Stage right is Tiffany’s house. There is a desk with a phone on it. She is sitting doing her homework. Stage left is Mary-Helen’s house. There is a chair and side table, she is calling Tiffany.)
(Phone Rings)
TIFFANY
(Picks up phone) Hello?
MARY-HELEN
Hey Tiffs, How’s it going?
TIFFANY
Not much, but I am looking at my shoe collection and I’ve noticed something. I have every brand except Guess. This is a shopping emergency! If I don’t complete my collection I’m going to die!
MARY-HELEN
I’ll pick you up. Where do you want to go The Mall Thee Mall or A Mall?
TIFFANY
The Mall is the best!
MARY-HELEN
All-righty I will be there in ten. Byes
(Music- Shoes by Kelly)
TIFFANY
Okay
(Both hang up phone)
(BLACK OUT)
(Center Stage is “The Mall” and “The Shoe Store.” The girls are in there shopping)
JAMIE “THE SALES PERSON”
Good afternoon ladies, may I help you find anything?
TIFFANY
No thank you, I know EXACTLY what I am looking for!
(The girls head for the sale section, they are looking at the shoes and Tiffany finds the pair she needs.)
MARY-HELEN
They don’t have my size! I am super mad.
TIFFANY
I guess that’s too bad, because they are in my size and now I can finally complete my collection! Super!
(They walk up to the cashier.)
JESSE “THE CASHIER”
Is this all for today ladies?
TIFFANY
Yes, yes I found everything I needed.
JESSE
May I interest you in a THE SHOE STORE club card; you get 20% off your first purchase.
GIRLS
No! That’s tacky.
JESSE
Your total comes to $113.37, cash or credit?
TIFFANY
Credit, duh? Who pays in cash anymore?
(Tiffany goes to swipe card)
JESSE
I am sorry but your card has been declined. Jamie come and take a look at this machine please. It’s not working.
JAMIE
(She swipes the card again)
The machine is working fine. Your credit card has been maxed out. Sorry!
TIFFANY
Oh my goodness! I couldn’t have, I just…Why? (Puts hands on chest, starts to shake, then falls to ground and is still shaking)
MARY-HELEN
TIFFANY! (Puts her hand on Tiffany’s shoulder.) What’s going on?
JAMIE
Some one call an ambulance!
(Ambulance sound)
(BLACKOUT)
(Stage right- Waiting room, Mary-Helen is sitting down and is worried about Tiffany. The Nurse walks up to her and tells her the news. Stage left- O.R. Tiffany on operating table, Doctors prepping. They are in tableau.)
NURSE
Excuse me, are you tiffany’s friend?
MARY-HELEN
Yes, I am, how is she doing?
NURSE
We will be going into surgery soon. We are trying to figure out what caused her to pass out.I will be checking in with you through out the surgery. (She walks into O.R.)
MARY-HELEN
I hope that she will be okay. (Freeze, now in tableau)
DOCTOR 1
We are all set to go now, nurse would you please give her the anesthetic. (Nurse put mask on Tiffany) Thank you.
DOCTOR 2
Heart Monitor on, mask on, let’s begin. Scalpel (Nurse Hands doctor the scalpel.)
DOCTOR 1
I don’t think that the “Wish bone” could cause something like that. Hmmm, the spare ribs might have knocked into something. Why don’t we check the bread basket?
DOCTOR 2
Yes, it could have been something she ate. Nurse can I have some scissors and gauze please.
NURSE
(Hands the doctor the equipment) Here you go. I will go and check on Mary- Helen.
(Nurse leaves and Doctors Keep Working)
DOCTOR 1
Oh! We forgot about the shoe! We need to take it out. Hey, maybe that’s what caused her to have the seizure.
DOCTOR 2
No, no, we’ve already determined that she had the seizure before the shoe got stuck into her head, that’s what made her unconscious.
(Doctor 1 pulls the shoe out and Tiffany’s head begins to bleed. He comes out quickly)
DOCTOR 1
Nurse we need you in there we are loosing her! Come Quick!
(Mary-Helen is in shock and begins to cry)
(Heart monitor sound begins to increase in speed.)
DOCTOR 1
Get the defibrillators quick, 100 CC’s Stat! (Grabs paddles and begins to try and resuscitate Tiffany) Increase the power, were losing her fast! (Continues to use paddles)
(Heart Monitor Stops)
DOCTOR 1
Shhh! No one needs to know what really happened.
DOCTOR 2
I understand, but his is the part of the job I hate.
(Doctors begin to clean up, as the nurse goes out to tell Mary-Helen)
NURSE
(Sympathetically) I am very sorry to inform you, but your friend, did not make it.
(Mary-Helen begins to cry.)
MARY-HELEN (Sobbing)
(BLACK OUT)
(Music–Name by the Goo Goo Dolls, Tiffany is in a casket, Friends and Family are sitting, flowers in hand.)
MINISTER
Today we are celebrating the life of “Tiffany Beth Johnson.” The last week of her life was spent with her family and friends and I don’t think she would have wanted it any other way. We thank God for this wonderful girl. You may now place your flowers on the casket as we say our last goodbyes.
(One by one every one goes up and places the flowers on casket as music is playing)
MINISTER
The family would like to thank everyone for coming and celebrating the life of “Tiffany Beth Johnson” You may now go in peace.
(Everyone is gone but Mary-Helen, she has the shoe in her hand)
MARY-HELEN
Hey Tiffany, I went the mall today, and I bought you those shoes you wanted. (She sets the shoes down.)I’ll miss you.
